Analytics eViews Dynamic Date Points explained

Analytics eViews Dynamic Date Points explained

eViews by design displays data as lists, and in order to show calculated figures based on predetermined date or period ranges the figures need to be pre-calculated based on pre-determined date or period ranges.

Due to limited column header display options of these lists views, concise yet meaningful labels need to be offered to the user. As a result these labels, particularly as they apply to dynamic pre-determined date or period ranges, must be easy to understand at a glance.

As follows is a list of pre-determined period ranges currently offered in the Analytics eViews. (See further explanations below)

Convention:

  • Ø All predetermined ranges are measured in periods
  • Ø There are 2 distinct groups of predetermined period ranges, Fiscal and Rolling ranges.
  • Ø Fiscal Ranges:
    • labels consist of 1 to 3 elements separated by a hyphen
    • First element from the left always indicates the fiscal year within which a pre-determined period range fall
    • The following fiscal years are used:
      • CY – “Current Year”  (falls within the current fiscal year)
      • LY – “Last Year” (falls within the previous fiscal year)
    • The second element from the left (if relevant) indicates the duration of time that the pre-determined period range represents within the specified fiscal year.
      • M – “Month”  (a duration of one month within the specified fiscal year)
      • Q – “Quarter” (a duration of 3 months within the specified fiscal year)
      • TD – “To Date” (a duration of start of specified fiscal year to end of month prior to current month)
    • The third element from the left (if relevant) indicates the relative position of the duration period within the specified fiscal year.
      • 01, 02, 03 …. 12 – relative position within specified fiscal year
      • If the relative position follows the duration of time element of “M” then the relative position will be within the range of 1 to 12 where 01 would indicate the first month of the fiscal year, 02, would indicate the second month of the fiscal year and so forth up to 12 that would indicate the last month of the fiscal year
      • If the relative position follows the duration of time element of “Q” then the relative position will be within the range of 1 to 4 where 01 would indicate the first 3 months or quarter of the fiscal year, 02 would indicate the second 3 months or quarter of the fiscal year and 04 would indicate the last 3 months or quarter of the fiscal year.

  • Ø Rolling Ranges:
    • labels consist of 2 elements separated by a hyphen
    • First element from the left indicates the duration of time that the pre-determined period range represents
    • This duration of time is not fixed against a fiscal period but rather is based on a relative position measured backwards from today
    • The following durations are used:
      • RHY – “Rolling Half Year” (represents a six month period)
      • RM – “Rolling Month” (represents a single month period)
      • RQ – “Rolling Quarter” (represents a 3 month period)
      • RY – “Rolling Year” (represents a 12 month period)
    • The second element from the left indicates the relative position backwards from today measured in the relevant period specified in the first element
      • For RM relative positions are available between 0 and 25, where “00” represents the current month period, “01” represents the first 1 month period back from the current month period, 02 represents the second month period back from the current month period and so forth.
      • For RHY relative positions are available between 1 and 6 where “01” represents the first 6 months back from the current month period etc.
      • For RQ relative positions are available between 1 and 12 where “01” represents the first 3 months back from the current month period etc.
      • For RY relative positions are available between 1 and 3 where “01” represents the first 12 months back from the current month etc.
      • Note: RM-01 is always the first month period in RHY-01, RQ-01 and RY-01

RM00 is the current month in analytics.  It is not included in any of the other Rolling buckets (like Rolling Quarter, Rolling Half Year, Rolling Year) because of course it would skew profitability numbers with cost for items before any revenue might be recognized.

So if your working in eviews analytics, and you work with RQ01..then your pulling RM01, RM02, RM03.  And that just flows backwards thru all the dimensions.

One of the first things we recommend is to do into the Customer Transaction Details (Analytics) e-view and select “Detail Type” = ‘Labor’ and ‘Travel’ and sort the COST column so that you can see if you have any garbage data that needs to be cleaned up.  For example if you have a mileage rate associated in euatomate for call mileage, then you might have some costs in the tens of thousands of dollars show up where techs made bad data entry errors (like putting their odometer reading in the “miles travelled” field).  Anyway, it’s imperative that you check those costs as those coule blow up eautomate regular contract profitability reports as well as analytics with grossly in accurate data.
