Overview
Overview
Knowing whether your installed base is growing or shrinking (and why!) is essential for understanding the health of your business. ID671 tracks Machines-in-Field (MIF) trends - the change in the count of distinct machines under contract at any given point in time.
The report shows how that number is moving by comparing any two dates (previous month, quarter, year, or same day last year), and breaks down movement into New, Lost, Retained, and Relocated machines. There are several focused pages which, together, give leadership a clear view of fleet size, churn, contract health, and where the business is gaining or losing ground.

Full Report Overview
The ID671 MIF Trends report gives leadership and operations a single, consistent view of the copier dealer's installed base — the Machines in Field (MIF), defined as the count of distinct machines under contract on any given date — and, just as importantly, how that base is changing over time. It is built on a snapshot fact table of machine coverage windows joined to Equipment, Customer, Contract and Date dimensions, so every page can answer both “how many active machines do we have right now?” and “what has moved since a chosen point in the past?”
The report lets the user pick a reporting date and a comparison period (previous month, previous quarter, previous year, or the same day last year) and then decomposes the movement in the installed base into four mutually exclusive groups: machines New to the field, machines Lost from the field, machines Retained in the field across both dates, and — at the whole-fleet level — machines that were Relocated (retained, but moved to a different location). This New / Lost / Retained framework is the backbone of the whole report and reconciles cleanly on every page.
From that foundation the report fans out into purpose-built pages: an executive scorecard for a one-glance read, trend and momentum views for trajectory, movement and relocation views for the drivers of change, and a set of “segment” pages that slice the same measures by account, equipment, contract and territory. A retention and cohort page studies how long machines stay in the field, and two fully user-configurable “custom” pages let power users build their own pivots and lists. Throughout, KPI cards and visuals can be right-clicked to drill through to the underlying machine-level detail.
Because the same core measures are re-used everywhere and always respond to the shared reporting-period and comparison controls (and to the filter panel), users can move from an executive number down to an individual serial number without the definitions shifting underneath them.
Report Assumptions
- MIF counts distinct machines that are under contract on the reporting date. A machine is treated as active on a given date when it has a contract-coverage window (a start-to-end period in the underlying fact table) that spans that date; a machine with no covering window on that date is not counted.
- The reporting date is the latest date in the selected period (the “as of” date that drives every current number). The comparison date is derived automatically from the “Compare to” selection — previous month-end, previous quarter-end, previous year-end, or the same calendar day one year earlier.
- New, Lost and Retained are defined against those two dates: New = in field now but not at the comparison date; Lost = in field at the comparison date but not now; Retained = in field at both dates. New + Retained reconciles to current MIF, and Lost + Retained reconciles to MIF at the comparison date.
- Standard movement measures keep the user’s Customer and Contract filters, so they answer “what changed for this account or contract.” The dedicated fleet measures on the Fleet Movement & Relocations page deliberately strip Customer and Contract filters so they always describe the whole installed base.
- Relocations are retained machines that changed location between the two dates — the same physical machine that moved from one customer location to another. A machine that simply renewed or re-papered its contract at the same location is treated as Retained, not Relocated. At the whole-fleet level every relocation is one location’s outbound move and another location’s inbound move, so fleet Inbound, Outbound and Relocations reconcile to the same total.
- Several pages intentionally lock parts of the period controls where a fixed window is part of the definition — for example the retention views are inherently twelve-month, and contract-expiry exposure is measured forward from the reporting date.
- To keep the installed-base picture current, the report should be scheduled to refresh on a regular cadence; every page shows a Last Refresh timestamp so users always know how current the data is.
Global Parameters
Selected pages of this report include a Narrative (Smart Narrative) visual — the “Executive Summary” panel — which uses Microsoft Copilot for Power BI to generate an intelligent, context-aware text summary of the data on the page. It interprets the visuals automatically and produces plain-language insights and likely leadership questions, without anyone writing the commentary by hand.
Because this capability depends on Copilot, the landing page asks the user to declare their environment with a simple choice — “Yes, Copilot is enabled” or “No, Copilot is not enabled.” Users on a Microsoft Fabric capacity with Copilot enabled are routed to the pages that include the narrative panel; all other users are routed to equivalent pages without it, so the full data and functionality of the report remain available regardless of environment.
General Report Features
1. Access to Report Pages
Like all CEOJuice Power BI reports, every page is reached from the Landing / Index page. Each tile carries a short description and a category label (Executive, Trends, Movement, Segments, Deep Dive, Custom) and links straight to the corresponding page. The landing page also shows when the report was last refreshed, a revision log (“What is new?”) describing the changes in the current release, a link to the report Documentation / Webinar, and a link to the Info & Glossary page. The Copilot environment choice described under Global Parameters also lives here.
2. Info & Glossary
The Info & Glossary page is the single source of truth for how every headline number is defined. It contains a measure glossary (MIF, reporting date, comparison date, New / Lost / Retained / Relocated, annual attrition, the at-risk age threshold, top-10 share of MIF, survival rate and more), a short explainer on how account-level and fleet-level views differ, and the reconciliation rules (the identities that always hold, such as New + Retained equalling current MIF). Users who are unsure what a card or column means should start here; the definitions match the logic used on every other page.
3. Access to Filters
Within each report page a filter / slicer panel is available from the settings icon in the top-right corner. The panel groups slicers into Customer parameters (account type, branch, account and location, reps, statuses and custom properties), Contract parameters (active/inactive status, type, contract and bill code, days to renewal and contract branch) and Equipment parameters (make, model class / category / type / segment, model, equipment and serial number, territory, equipment status, condition and bill code). These slicers narrow every measure on the page at once. The header of each page shows a plain-language summary of what is currently filtered (for example, “no filters applied — whole fleet, all accounts & contracts”) so users always know the scope of the numbers they are reading.
4. Reporting Period & “Compare to”
Every analytical page shares a set of period controls in the top band: Report Method (Rolling Months), a Rolling Months range with a slider that sets how many months of history the trend covers, and a “Compare to” dropdown that chooses the comparison period (previous month, previous quarter, previous year, or same day previous year). Immediately below the controls, a definition line restates what MIF measures and which comparison is currently in effect (including the resolved comparison date), so the meaning of New, Lost, Retained and Net Change is never ambiguous. Changing these controls updates every KPI, visual and drill-through on the page consistently. Some pages fix one or more of these controls where a specific window is part of the calculation.

Page 1 — Executive MIF Scorecard
Active machines in the field & how the base is shifting
Purpose / Scope
Give leadership a single-glance read on the current installed base and the direction it is moving — current MIF, the net change versus the chosen comparison period, and the gain/loss drivers behind it — with no drill-down required.
Expected outcome
An executive immediately knows the size of the fleet, whether it is growing or contracting versus the comparison period, and whether the movement is driven more by new placements or by losses.
KPIs used
- Active machines in field (MIF) — the headline count of distinct machines under contract on the reporting date.
- Net Change vs comparison — the change in MIF against the chosen comparison period, shown as a direction (up/down) with the unit and percentage movement.
- New to Field — machines placed since the comparison date (in field now, not then).
- Lost from Field — machines off contract since the comparison date (in field then, not now).
Visuals
- MIF trend — a month-end line/area chart of the installed base over the rolling window, with a trend line that shows the underlying slope.
- Executive Summary — the Copilot narrative panel that describes the current level, the year-over-year movement, when any decline or growth began, and the balance between acquisition and churn (shown only in the Copilot-enabled version of the page).
How to use this page
- Read the four cards left to right for level, direction, gains and losses, then use the trend chart to see whether the current position is a peak, a trough, or part of a sustained slope.
- Adjust “Compare to” to test the story against different baselines (last month vs last year), and right-click any card to drill through to the machine-level detail behind it.
Conclusions you can draw
- Whether the fleet is expanding or contracting, and how severe the movement is relative to its own recent history.
- Whether net change is being driven primarily by winning new machines or by losing existing ones — for example, a shrinking base where losses clearly outpace new placements points to a retention problem rather than a sales problem.
Page 2 — MIF Trend & Momentum
The installed-base trajectory over the rolling period
Purpose / Scope
Show how MIF has moved period over period and whether momentum is accelerating, flattening or reversing.
Expected outcome
The user can distinguish a temporary dip from a sustained trend and see where the recent inflection points sit within the rolling window.
KPIs used
- Active machines in field (MIF) — the current installed-base count.
- 12-month high — the highest month-end MIF in the window, with the month it occurred.
- 12-month low — the lowest month-end MIF in the window, with the month it occurred.
- 3-month momentum — the short-term change in MIF over the most recent three months, showing direction and magnitude.
Visuals
- A large month-end MIF trend chart with a trend line, giving a full-width view of the trajectory and its slope across the rolling period.
How to use this page
- Compare the high and low cards to the current level to gauge how far the base has swung, and read the 3-month momentum card to see whether the most recent movement is improving or deteriorating.
- Widen or narrow the Rolling Months range to see short-term momentum in the context of a longer or shorter history.
Conclusions you can draw
- Whether the installed base is near a cyclical high or low and whether the latest quarter is bending the curve up or down.
- For example, a flattening after a steep decline suggests early stabilisation, whereas continued negative momentum near the low suggests the decline has not yet bottomed out.
Page 3 — Movement Analysis
What’s driving the change in active machines
Purpose / Scope
Decompose the net MIF change into machines gained, lost and retained for the selected comparison, in the current filter context.
Expected outcome
The user can see exactly how the fleet moved from the comparison date to the reporting date and which component (new, lost or retained) dominates the story.
KPIs used
- New to Field — machines placed since the comparison date.
- Lost from Field — machines off contract since the comparison date.
- Retained MIF — machines in field at both dates.
- Net Change vs comparison — the overall movement in MIF.
- Active machines at the comparison date — the starting installed base.
- Active machines at the reporting date — the ending installed base.
Visuals
- Churn Waterfall — a bridge from the prior installed base to the current installed base, showing the retained core, the new machines added and the lost machines removed, so the arithmetic of the change is visible in one picture.
How to use this page
- Read the waterfall left to right: start (prior), the retained base that carried over, the new machines added, the lost machines removed, and the resulting current base.
- Apply account, equipment or contract filters to see the same decomposition for a specific slice of the business.
Conclusions you can draw
- Whether the period’s net change is mostly a churn story or an acquisition story, and how large the stable retained core is relative to the moving parts.
- For example, a large retained core with losses exceeding new placements shows the base is mostly intact but eroding at the edges faster than it is being replenished.
Page 4 — Fleet Movement & Relocations
True fleet gains and losses, separating real churn from internal moves
Purpose / Scope
At the whole-fleet level (ignoring customer and contract filters), separate machines genuinely new to, or lost from, the fleet from those that were merely relocated to a different location — and show, per account, what moved in and out.
Expected outcome
The user can tell real fleet churn apart from internal movement and see which accounts are net receivers or net senders of relocated machines.
KPIs used
- New MIF (fleet) — machines genuinely new to the whole installed base.
- Lost MIF (fleet) — machines genuinely gone from the whole installed base.
- Retained MIF (fleet) — machines present in the fleet on both dates.
- Relocated MIF (fleet) — retained machines that changed location between the two dates.
- Relocation Rate (fleet) — relocated machines as a share of the retained fleet.
Visuals
- A per-account table showing, for each account, the prior and current MIF, New, Lost and Retained, and three relocation columns — Relocations, Inbound (relocated machines that arrived at the account) and Outbound (relocated machines that left the account) — with a reconciling total row and colour-coded columns.
How to use this page
- Use the fleet cards for the true churn headline, then scan the Inbound and Outbound columns to find accounts that are gaining or shedding machines through relocation rather than through genuine wins and losses.
- Remember that an account can show Inbound without Outbound (or vice-versa): a location that did not exist a year ago can only receive machines, while a location that machines left will show outbound only.
Conclusions you can draw
- How much of the apparent account-level churn is really the same machines moving between locations rather than leaving the dealer.
- For example, an account whose losses are matched by another account’s gains indicates an internal relocation, not a lost machine — protecting the fleet total even though the individual accounts changed.
Page 5 — Accounts / Customers Performance
Where the installed base is growing and declining by Account
Purpose / Scope
Rank accounts by MIF and by net change, surfacing the customers driving growth and those losing machines, and show how concentrated the base is among the largest accounts.
Expected outcome
The user can identify the biggest accounts, the fastest movers in both directions, and how dependent the installed base is on a handful of customers.
KPIs used
- Accounts with Active MIF — the number of accounts holding at least one active machine.
- Accounts Growing — accounts whose MIF increased versus the comparison.
- Accounts Declining — accounts whose MIF decreased versus the comparison.
- Top 10 share of MIF — the share of total MIF held by the ten largest accounts — a concentration / dependency indicator.
Visuals
- An account table with prior and current MIF, absolute and percentage change, New, Lost and Retained, and a Trend indicator (growing / declining / stable). The table is sortable so users can rank by size or by movement.
How to use this page
- Sort by current MIF to see the largest accounts, or by change to see the biggest movers; use the growing/declining cards as a quick pulse on how broad the movement is across the customer base.
- Read the Top 10 share card alongside the table: a high share means revenue risk is concentrated, so a single account’s decline matters more.
Conclusions you can draw
- Which accounts warrant account-management attention — both expansion opportunities and retention risks — and whether growth and decline are broad-based or concentrated.
- For example, a high top-10 share combined with a large declining account is an early warning that overall MIF is exposed to a single relationship.
Page 6 — Equipment Mix & Lifecycle
Fleet composition & aging by make, model & category
Purpose / Scope
Profile the active base by equipment attributes and show how the mix shifts as machines are placed and retired.
Expected outcome
The user can see what the fleet is made of, how old it is, and which makes or model categories are growing or aging out.
KPIs used
- Active Models in Field — the number of distinct models currently active.
- MIF Placed Last 12 Months — recently placed machines, a read on refresh activity.
- Machines Over 7 Years — the count of older machines in the base.
- Avg Machine Age (Years) — the average age of the active fleet.
Visuals
- MIF by Make and MIF by Model Category — ranked bar charts of the active base by equipment attribute.
- Fleet age profile — a bar chart of machines by age band.
- A matrix by model category (expandable to make) showing prior and current MIF, change, New, Lost, Retained, average age and a Trend indicator.
How to use this page
- Use the bars to see where the fleet is concentrated by brand and category, and the age profile to gauge how much of the base is approaching end of life.
- Expand the matrix to compare makes within a category and spot lines that are growing young or declining and aging.
Conclusions you can draw
- Which parts of the fleet are being refreshed and which are aging without replacement, informing procurement and proactive replacement conversations.
- For example, a category with rising average age and negative net change signals a segment that is aging out and likely to need a replacement push.
Page 7 — Contract Portfolio Analysis
Active machines by contract and the impact of expirations
Purpose / Scope
Tie MIF to contracts — coverage, machines per contract, and the base at risk from upcoming end dates.
Expected outcome
The user can see how the installed base sits across contracts and how much of it is exposed to near-term renewals or expirations.
KPIs used
- Contracts with Active MIF — the number of contracts currently covering machines.
- Avg MIF per Contract — the average number of machines per active contract.
- MIF on contract expiring in 90 days — machines whose contract reaches its end date within the next quarter.
- MIF Placed Last 90 Days — recent placements, as a near-term acquisition read.
Visuals
- MIF by Contract Standing — a bar chart splitting the base into month-to-month (no fixed term), under contract in term, renewal due within 90 days, and auto-renewing / evergreen.
- Renewal exposure — next 6 months — a column chart of MIF reaching a contract end date in each of the coming months.

- Use the contract-standing bars to understand how much of the base is on firm terms versus month-to-month, and the renewal-exposure columns to plan retention outreach ahead of end dates.
- Drill into the table to find the specific contracts (and accounts) behind an upcoming expiry spike.
Conclusions you can draw
- Where renewal risk is concentrated in time and which contracts carry the most machines, so retention effort can be prioritised before expirations occur.
- For example, a large share of MIF sitting month-to-month or expiring in the next quarter flags a book of business that could churn quickly without proactive renewals.
Page 8 — Territory Analysis
Installed base & performance across territories
Purpose / Scope
Compare MIF and its change by territory, so the geographic distribution and performance of the base is clear.
Expected outcome
The user can see which territories hold the most machines and which are growing or declining fastest.
KPIs used
- Territories with Active MIF — the number of territories holding active machines.
- Top territory MIF — the largest territory by installed base, named.
- Fastest growing — the territory with the largest gain versus the comparison, named.
- Fastest declining — the territory with the largest loss versus the comparison, named.
Visuals
- A territory table with prior and current MIF, absolute and percentage change, New, Lost, Net Change, Retained and a Trend indicator, sortable by size or movement.
How to use this page
- Rank territories by size or by change to see where the base is strongest and where it is moving; note that some rows represent operational pseudo-territories (for example shipped-out or in-house holding categories) rather than sales geographies, and can be filtered out for a cleaner field view.
- Combine with the filter panel to focus on a single territory’s accounts or equipment.
Conclusions you can draw
- Which territories are carrying and growing the installed base and which are shrinking, supporting territory-level coverage and resourcing decisions.
- For example, a territory declining sharply while neighbours grow may indicate a coverage gap or a large local account loss worth investigating.
Page 9 — Retention & Cohort Analysis
How long machines stay in the field
Purpose / Scope
Follow cohorts of machines over time to measure retention and survival of the active base, and translate that behaviour into a simple forward view.
Expected outcome
The user understands how sticky the installed base is, how long a typical machine stays in the field, and what replacement volume would be needed to hold the base flat.
KPIs used
- 12-Month Retention — the share of the machines present a year ago that are still in the field today.
- Median Machine Life (Years) — the typical lifespan of an active machine.
- Annual Attrition — the share lost over a year — the complement of 12-month retention.
- At-risk (life > p75) — the age threshold (75th percentile of machine age) above which machines are considered most likely to be replaced or lost soon.
Visuals
- Retention by placement cohort — a triangle heatmap showing, for each placement year, the percentage of that year’s machines still active after N years.
- 12-Month Retention trend — a monthly line (with trend line) of the rolling retention rate.
- Survival Curve — the share of machines still in the field by age.
- What retention tells forecasting — a panel deriving Expected Machines Retained Next Year, Expected Natural Attrition, Placements Needed to Hold Flat, and Implied MIF if placements continue at trend.
How to use this page
- Read the cohort triangle across a row to see how a given year’s placements decay over time, and down a column to compare cohorts at the same age; use the survival curve to find the ages where machines tend to drop off.
- Use the forecasting panel as a planning input: the placements needed to hold flat is the replacement target implied by current attrition.
Conclusions you can draw
- Whether retention is stable, improving or worsening, and how much new placement volume is required simply to offset natural attrition.
- For example, if placements needed to hold flat exceed recent new placements, the base will keep shrinking even if sales stay at their current pace.
Page 10 — Custom Pivots
Custom views — active machines and how the base is shifting
Purpose / Scope
Let power users build their own pivot of the core measures, choosing the row grouping, an optional column grouping, and which KPIs to display.
Expected outcome
The user can answer ad-hoc “by-anything” questions without needing a new page built, using the same measures as the rest of the report.
KPIs used
- Active machines in field (MIF) — current installed base.
- Net Change vs comparison — movement versus the comparison period.
- New to Field — machines placed since the comparison date.
- Lost from Field — machines off contract since the comparison date.
Visuals
- A fully configurable matrix driven by three controls: Group / Rows Pivots (one or more dimensions for the rows, expandable), Group / Column Pivots (an optional dimension across the columns), and Select KPIs (which measure columns to show). The matrix carries the same conditional formatting and Trend indicators as the fixed pages.
How to use this page
- Pick the row dimensions to group by, optionally add a column pivot to cross-tabulate, and choose the KPIs to display; expand rows to move from summary to detail.
- Use it to prototype a view — if a particular cut proves valuable, it can be promoted into a standard page later.
Conclusions you can draw
- Any tailored breakdown of MIF and its movement that a standard page does not already provide, on demand and consistent with the report’s definitions.
- For example, grouping by model category and pivoting by make quickly reveals which brand within a category is driving that category’s growth or decline.
Page 11 — Custom Lists
Custom views — active machines and how the base is shifting
Purpose / Scope
Provide a flat, list-style version of the custom view for users who want a straightforward, exportable table rather than a pivoted matrix.
Expected outcome
The user can produce a clean, filtered list grouped by their chosen dimensions with only the KPI columns they need.
KPIs used
- Active machines in field (MIF) — current installed base.
- Net Change vs comparison — movement versus the comparison period.
- New to Field — machines placed since the comparison date.
- Lost from Field — machines off contract since the comparison date.
Visuals
- A flat table driven by Group / Rows Pivots (the grouping dimension, for example account with its type, status and branch attributes) and Select KPIs (the measure columns), with prior/current MIF, change and the New / Lost / Retained columns, plus a reconciling total row.
How to use this page
- Choose the grouping and the KPI columns, sort as needed, and use the filter panel to scope the list; the flat layout is well suited to review and export.
- Switch to Custom Pivots instead when a cross-tabulated (row-by-column) layout is more useful than a list.
Conclusions you can draw
- A focused, self-service list of accounts (or any chosen dimension) with exactly the movement metrics required for a given task.
- For example, a list of accounts grouped by branch with New and Lost columns makes it easy to hand each branch its own gain/loss sheet.
Drill-Through Functionality
Most KPI cards and many visuals support drill-through to the underlying machine-level detail. Right-click a card or a data point, choose Drill through, and select the destination detail page — the drill-through carries the current reporting date, comparison period and filters with it, so the detail always matches the number that was clicked.
The detail pages list machines at the equipment level (equipment and serial number, make, model, condition, status, account, contracts on the machine, technician and sales rep, location and remarks) and tag each machine with its Eq. Status / Movement (New, Retained, Lost, and — where relevant — the relocated variants). Several detail pages also include small by-make, by-model-category and by-age-profile breakdowns of the machines in scope.

The machines behind the current installed base
Purpose / Scope
List, at the machine level, every active machine that makes up the current MIF, with its equipment, account, contract, technician, sales-rep, location and status detail.
Expected outcome
A user can move from the headline MIF number straight to the exact machines it represents, for validation or follow-up, without a separate export.
How to access
Right-click the Active machines in field (MIF) card and choose Drill through → Active MIF.

The machines behind the net change vs the comparison period
Purpose / Scope
Show the machine-level detail behind the net change, with each machine tagged by its movement (New, Retained, Lost and relocated variants) so the composition of the change is fully traceable.
Expected outcome
A user can see precisely which machines moved and how, and cross-reference technician, location and remarks for context.
How to access
Right-click the Net Change card and choose Drill through → Net Change in MIF.

New to field — placed since the comparison date
Purpose / Scope
List the machines newly placed since the comparison date, with small by-make, by-model-category and by-age-profile breakdowns of the new machines and a full detail table.
Expected outcome
A user can characterise the new placements — what was placed, of what age and where — and separate genuine new-to-fleet from new-to-account (relocated-in) machines.
How to access
Right-click the New to Field card and choose Drill through → New MIF.

Lost from field — off contract since the comparison date
Purpose / Scope
List the machines lost since the comparison date, with by-make, by-model-category and by-age-profile breakdowns and a detail table that includes the termination code for each machine.
Expected outcome
A user can understand what was lost and why, and spot patterns in the makes, ages or reasons behind the losses.
How to access
Right-click the Lost from Field card and choose Drill through → Lost MIF.

The machines behind the recent 3-month momentum
Purpose / Scope
Break down the short-term momentum figure to the account and machine level, with a per-account table carrying a dedicated 3-month momentum column alongside the standard movement columns.
Expected outcome
A user can see which accounts and machines drove the most recent three-month swing, up or down.
How to access
Right-click the 3-month momentum card on the MIF Trend & Momentum page and choose Drill through → MIF 3-Month Momentum.

Purpose / Scope

The machines we had a year ago — and which are still in the field
Purpose / Scope
Show the retention base (the machines present twelve months ago) and split it into those retained and those lost, at the machine level, alongside the retention rate and its monthly trend.
Expected outcome
A user can see exactly which of last year’s machines were kept and which were lost, and how the retention rate has trended month by month.

Active machines past the fleet’s 75th-percentile age
Purpose / Scope
List the oldest quarter of the active fleet — the machines whose age exceeds the fleet’s 75th-percentile age threshold — with each machine’s age, how far it sits over the threshold, and an at-risk status flag.
Expected outcome
A user can target proactive replacement by focusing on the specific machines most likely to be replaced or lost soon.

Installed Base
Active machines in field (MIF): The count of distinct machines under contract on the reporting date. A machine is active when it has a contract-coverage window that spans that date.
Reporting Date: The “as of” date driving every current number — the latest date in the selected period.
Comparison Date: Derived automatically from the “Compare to” selection — previous month-end, quarter-end, year-end, or the same calendar day one year earlier.
Movement Measures
New to Field: Machines in field at the reporting date but not at the comparison date.
Lost from Field: Machines in field at the comparison date but not at the reporting date.
Retained MIF: Machines in field at both the comparison date and the reporting date. New + Retained = current MIF; Lost + Retained = MIF at the comparison date.
Net Change vs Comparison: The overall movement in MIF between the comparison date and the reporting date (New minus Lost).
Relocated MIF: Retained machines that changed location between the two dates — the same physical machine moved from one customer location to another. A machine that renewed its contract at the same location is Retained, not Relocated.
Relocation Rate: Relocated machines as a share of the retained fleet.
3-Month Momentum: The short-term change in MIF over the most recent three months, showing direction and magnitude.
Retention & Lifecycle
12-Month Retention: The share of machines present a year ago that are still in the field today.
Annual Attrition: The share of machines lost over a year — the complement of 12-Month Retention.
Median Machine Life (Years): The typical lifespan of an active machine based on historical data.
At-Risk (life > p75): The age threshold above which machines are considered most likely to be replaced or lost soon. Set at the 75th percentile of machine age across the active fleet.
Survival Rate: The share of machines from a given placement cohort still active in the field after N years, as shown on the Survival Curve.
Forecasting
Expected Machines Retained Next Year: Current MIF multiplied by the 12-Month Retention rate — the number of today’s machines expected to still be active in 12 months.
Expected Natural Attrition: Current MIF multiplied by the Annual Attrition rate — the number of machines expected to leave the field over the next 12 months based on current retention behaviour.
Placements Needed to Hold Flat: The number of new machine placements required over the next 12 months simply to offset expected natural attrition and maintain the current MIF level.
Implied MIF if Placements Continue at Trend: A forward-looking MIF estimate based on current attrition rates and recent new placement volumes continuing at their current pace.
Concentration
Top 10 Share of MIF: The share of total MIF held by the ten largest accounts — an indicator of installed base concentration and dependency risk.
